In a move that reshapes the global gaming landscape, Savvy Games Group has officially acquired MOONTON GAMES, the developer behind the hit title Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, from ByteDance for $6 billion, in one of the six largest acquisitions in the history of the video game industry, marking a significant milestone in Saudi Arabia’s mission to become a dominant force in the sector. By bringing the mobile esports powerhouse under its umbrella, Savvy aims to foster long-term innovation and connectivity through its growing ecosystem.
The addition of MOONTON GAMES aligns with Savvy’s track record of high-value investments intended to diversify its gaming assets. Before this $6 billion deal, the group successfully integrated Scopely for $4.9 billion, ESL FACEIT Group for $1.5 billion, and Niantic for $3.5 billion. These moves collectively establish a comprehensive infrastructure that spans game development, competitive esports platforms, and augmented reality technology. According to Savvy Games CEO Brian Ward, the acquisition is a direct reflection of the company’s purpose to drive prosperity and growth for future generations of players.
For ByteDance, the divestment of MOONTON represents a calculated pivot away from core game development to prioritize emerging technologies. After a period of aggressive entry into the gaming market, the company is now reallocating its resources and internal talent to lead in the field of generative AI. This exit allows the TikTok parent company to streamline its operations while ensuring that its former gaming subsidiary has the capital and support of a dedicated gaming conglomerate. The transition is expected to be seamless for the Mobile Legends community as the studio integrates into Savvy’s international network.
The broader context of this deal is rooted in Saudi Arabia’s “Vision 2030” initiative, which seeks to transform the nation into a premier global hub for the digital economy. Savvy Games Group serves as the primary vehicle for this transformation, utilizing substantial capital to attract top-tier talent and intellectual property to the region. By securing one of the world’s most popular mobile MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) titles, the group enhances its influence in the Asian market and the mobile gaming sphere at large. This strategy not only focuses on software ownership but also on building the physical and digital architecture necessary to host major international esports tournaments.
